BTS has been at the forefront of the production of Guidelines for best clinical practice in respiratory medicine since the Society was established over 40 years ago. This Quality Standard has been developed by a multi-disciplinary team of experts to benchmark high-quality, cost-effective patient care in pleural disease.
Aimed at healthcare professionals, patients and service providers, the Quality Standard enables clinicians to make decisions about patient care based on the latest evidence and best practice. It aims to provide understanding and confidence in service provision and to highlight what high-quality care looks like.
The Quality Standard covers the fundamentals of delivering care, and features statements which can be used ensure the safety and suitability of patient services, alongside information on how to measure progress i.e. quality measures.
Co-chairs of the Pleural Disease quality standard committee Dr Mark Roberts and Professor Najib M Rahman say;
“This is an important document which will drive healthcare standards based on evidence. The BTS Pleural Diseases Guidelines 2023 made recommendations on the highest quality evidence for the investigation and management of pleural disease.
This document provides measurable, quality metrics which can be applied in healthcare settings ensuring that the best quality and safest care is provided to our patients.”
BTS Chair, Professor Richard Russell, says;
“Pleural disease is common and can be life-limiting, yet patients still face avoidable delays and inconsistent care.
This Quality Standard sets out clear, measurable expectations which will provide a practical framework and improve patient care.”
