President's Award winners 2025

The President’s Awards are presented to individuals who have national or international standing and have made a significant impact on clinical respiratory care during their career.

We are delighted to congratulate Professor Sally Singh and Professor Najib M Rahman, both of whom are truly deserving of this recognition.

Professor Sally Singh

Professor Sally Singh is the Head of Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, with roles at the University of Leicester’s Department of Respiratory Sciences and Coventry University’s School of Physiotherapy.

Her research specialisms include pulmonary rehabilitation and digital interventions to support rehabilitation and recovery. She has received research funding to understand the acceptability of manual and digital interventions, with her research extending to low and middle-income countries, exploring culturally appropriate rehabilitation interventions for chronic lung disease.

As well as being a member of the World Health Organisation’s Development Group for COPD rehabilitation programme, Professor Singh is the clinical lead for the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme (NRAP).

She co-chaired the BTS Clinical Statement on Pulmonary Rehabilitation and is also co-chair of the BTS Quality Standards for PR, currently in preparation.

Professor Najib M Rahman

Najib Rahman is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit. He is a national and international expert in pleural medicine, and the results of his multi-centre RCTs have changed guidelines and practice.

He plays a pivotal role in UK research, both as a NIHR Senior Investigator and as the recently appointed National Respiratory Lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network. His landmark studies have included publications in the NEJM and Lancet and have led to practice changes across the UK and the world.

He also has important roles with the NHS, leading a world-class tertiary pleural service and supporting the tertiary diagnostic EBUS service in Oxford, and has been very active within the British Thoracic Society over the past decade, holding a number of important positions.
