Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation February Session 1 of 2 - 2026

Supporting education in pulmonary rehabilitation for all members of the multi-professional team remains a priority for BTS. We offer two separate online courses annually which cater for distinct audiences. They are aligned with national standards, including the BTS Clinical Statement on Pulmonary Rehabilitation: https://www.brit-thoracic.org.uk/quality-improvement/clinical-statements/pulmonary-rehabilitation/

  • The Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation (for those who are new to PR)
  • Advanced Pulmonary Rehabilitation (for those with some years’ experience working in PR)

The Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The course will appeal to a multi-disciplinary audience as an introduction for new members of staff delivering rehabilitation. It will also be useful for teams who will be applying for national accreditation of their PR service.

The learning objectives for this course are:

  • Demonstrate your understanding of the evidence for pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the basic principles of exercise training
  • Evaluate the functional status of a participant and prescribe an appropriate exercise training    programme (aerobic and strength).  In line with the ERS/ATS statement and SOP’s
  • Analyse the service outcomes of rehabilitation and compare to the PR National Audit data.

To increase capacity and maximise engagement with the faculty, this course was adapted for 2026.
A course will be available approximately every 6 months, and it will include 2 complementary elements:

-          Part 1: A package of pre-learning modules composed of a series of recorded (narrated) presentations and MCQs to provide a basic knowledge check.

-          Part 2: Followed by a half day interactive online workshop.

Delegates are required to complete both elements of the course (completing Part 1 before attending Part 2) to gain a certificate of attendance.

The Part 1 pre-learning will include chapters on:

  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation as part of the management of COPD (overview)
  • Patient selection and initial assessment
  • Properties, conduct and practice of the 6MWT and ISWT
  • The fundamentals of aerobic exercise prescription
  • The fundamentals of resistance exercise prescription
  • Overview of the educational component
  • Rehabilitation in non-COPD

It will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete all the chapters so please ensure that you have the time for this available before the date of the online workshop.

This is an integral part of the course, and it is your professional responsibility to engage with these resources prior to attending the half day interactive online workshop.

Part 1 will be available immediately for those delegates that pay by credit/debit card. For those paying by invoice, Part 1 will be released when a Purchase Order (PO) has been received by BTS.

The dates for the courses in 2026 will be: 25 February and 1 July and will run between 1.00pm & 5.00pm.

Bookings will close on 11 February for the 25 February course and 17 June course for the 1 July course to allow time for you to complete the modules prior to attending the online course.

At the online workshop you will have access to our expert faculty and the programme will facilitate interaction and shared learning.

Full terms and conditions are available here, but the conditions specific to this course are summarised below:

  • By booking a place, delegates gain access to the pre-learning and secure a place at the online workshop.
  • You must complete the pre-learning and attend the online workshop to get a certificate of attendance.
  • If you are unable to complete the pre-learning prior to the workshop, please contact BTS and we can move your booking to the next online workshop. You may do this once without needing to rebook. If you need to amend your booking a further time, you will need to pay the course fee again.

For information, the Advanced Practice in Pulmonary Rehabilitation will be held on 4 & 5 November 2026. This is aimed at a multi-professional audience with some years’ experience of working in PR and before attending this course we recommend that delegates have completed the fundamentals to PR course we offer.
