Supporting education in pulmonary rehabilitation for all members of the multi-professional team remains a key priority for BTS. We offer two online pulmonary rehabilitation courses each year, designed for professionals at different stages of practice and aligned with national standards, including the BTS Clinical Statement on Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • The Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation 

    This introductory course is designed for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals who are new to delivering pulmonary rehabilitation, including new members of staff joining rehabilitation services. It is also one of the nationally approved courses recognised by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Accreditation Scheme (PRSAS).

    Learning objectives:

    By the end of the course, you will be able to:

    • Demonstrate your understanding of the evidence for pulmonary rehabilitation
    • Demonstrate your understanding of the basic principles of exercise training
    • Evaluate the functional status of a participant and prescribe an appropriate exercise training programme (aerobic and strength), in line with the ERS/ATS statement and SOP’s
    • Analyse the service outcomes of rehabilitation and compare to the PR National Audit data

    To increase capacity and maximise engagement with the faculty, this course was redesigned in 2025.  

    Course structure:

    The course runs approximately every six months and consists of two complementary parts.

    Part 1:
    • A package of pre-learning modules composed of a series of recorded (narrated) presentations and MCQs to provide a basic knowledge check
    Part 2:
    • A half-day interactive online workshop

    To receive a certificate of attendance, delegates must complete Part 1 before attending Part 2.

    Part 1: Pre-learning topics

    The pre-learning programme covers:

    • Pulmonary Rehabilitation as part of the management of COPD (overview)
    • Patient selection and initial assessment
    • Properties, conduct and practice of the 6MWT and ISWT
    • The fundamentals of aerobic exercise prescription
    • The fundamentals of resistance exercise prescription
    • Overview of the educational component
    • Rehabilitation in non-COPD 

    The pre-learning modules take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Please ensure you can dedicate sufficient time to these modules before attending the online workshop.  

    As an essential part of the course, delegates are expected to complete the pre-learning before the live session.

    Accessing the pre-learning

    • Delegates paying by credit or debit card will receive immediate access to the pre-learning modules
    • Delegates paying by invoice will receive access once BTS has received a valid purchase order (PO)

    All workshops will run from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

    Booking closes in advance to allow sufficient time to complete the pre-learning modules before the workshop.

    Before attending

    By booking a place, delegates will:

    • Secure a place at the live online workshop
    • Be required to complete the pre-learning and attend the workshop to receive a certificate of attendance

    If you are unable to complete the pre-learning before the workshop, please contact BTS. We can transfer your booking to the next available workshop on one occasion without any additional charge. Any further changes will require a new course booking and payment of the course fee.

    Advanced Pulmonary Rehabilitation

    The Advanced Pulmonary Rehabilitation course will take place on 3 and 4 November 2027.

    Designed for a multi-professional audience with experience working in pulmonary rehabilitation, this course explores more advanced aspects of clinical practice. We recommend that delegates complete the Fundamentals of Pulmonary Rehabilitation course before attending.

    Payment options 

    We accept payment by credit/debit card or invoice. If your employer is paying on your behalf, you can book online and choose the ‘Pay by invoice’ payment option. 

    To issue an invoice, which we only do to Finance Departments, not individuals, we will require a Purchase Order form sent to us at least 2 weeks prior to the event. If this is not received, we will have to cancel your place.
