This is a half day course: you can book either the morning or afternoon session.

  • Morning Session: 8:30am - 1:40pm
  • Afternoon Session: 12:50pm - 5:30pm

This practical programme provides hands-on, in-person training to complement and consolidate the learning gained during the BTS online NIV course on 7-8 May 2026.

We recommend that you complete the online course before attending this practical course.

  • The day has been split into two half days to allow for smaller group work, and will focus on the following themes:

    • An overview of an NIV device
    • Interface troubleshooting
    • NIV settings - optimising and titration
    • Troubleshooting and optimising patient care using case studies and simulation-based scenarios

    Places are limited to 25 per session, and delegates must choose which session (morning or afternoon) they would like to attend.

    Course facilitators are all experts in the field and are involved in the delivery of this specialist care.

    Payment options

    We accept payment by credit/debit card or invoice. If your employer is paying on your behalf, you can book online and choose the ‘Pay by invoice’ payment option.

    To issue an invoice, which we only do to Finance Departments, not individuals, we will require a Purchase Order Form sent to us at least two weeks prior to the event. If this is not received, we will have to cancel your place.

    9:00am - 9:10am Welcome and overview

    9:10am - 11:45am

    Delegates will split into three groups and will rotate through the following three sessions every 45 minutes. There will be a 20 minute break after the first two sessions.

    1. Overview of NIV device

    • Plug, interface, modes, 02 connector, humidification
    • Navigating your way round the device.

    2. Interface troubleshooting

    • Optimising mask fit; mask options; identifying interface issues using obs, vent, overnight pulse ox, etc

    3. Optimising settings (pressure, time, flow)

    • Quick re-cap of physiology of settings for NIV
    • Use of AG’s to discuss changes
    • Using vent parameters/obs to determine setting alterations, etc

    11:45am - 12:50pm

    Troubleshooting patients and vents

    This session provides delegates the opportunity to combine learning from the practical stations with an understanding of ventilator data and waveforms. Basic waveform analysis is shown in relation to clinical scenarios. We will explore problems with sputum retention, bronchospasm and asynchrony, alongside the roles of the wider MDT.
