Our Strategic Priorities
The British Thoracic Society has five strategic priorities for 2026-2028.
- Championing the respiratory workforce
We will provide an expert and authoritative voice to champion the role, expansion and impact of the multi-professional respiratory workforce so that everyone has access to high-quality respiratory care from the right person, at the right time, in the right setting.
Outcome: BTS will work with stakeholders across the UK to influence workforce planning, advocate for support role development, and prioritise staff recruitment, wellbeing and retention. - Delivering education and professional development
We will engage, encourage and support all members of the respiratory team across the four nations by delivering a portfolio of high-quality education and networking opportunities that are relevant, accessible and flexible for every stage of a career.
Outcome: BTS will provide in-person and online learning opportunities, leadership development, and networking opportunities that reflect the needs of those working in all four nations. - Advancing respiratory care and reducing inequalities
We will support the development and delivery of high-quality respiratory care which addresses health inequalities, encompasses disease prevention, early diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and supportive care.
Outcome: BTS will continue to advance standards of care for patients via our internationally recognised scientific meetings, journals, our programme of evidence-based guidance, standards and position statements. - Leading research, innovation and sustainability in respiratory health
We will advocate for increased research capacity, data-driven practice and environmentally sustainable models of respiratory care across patient pathways.
Outcome: BTS will advocate for cleaner air, net zero healthcare and a nicotine-free future, and will promote and collaborate internationally on research and innovation and support the adoption of digital healthcare solutions for the benefit of all respiratory patients. - Maintaining a well-governed, inclusive, and financially stable membership organisation
We will ensure our work is underpinned by strong and sound governance and financial management, ensuring transparency, accountability and resilience. Our membership will be inclusive and representative and seek to incorporate the patient and public voice in the work we do, through the organisations we work with, and in how the organisation is run.
Outcome: BTS will continue to represent and involve the growing multi-professional respiratory team in the work of the Society, underpinned by a strong and transparent business model and a supportive staff culture.
