Practical Management of TB - 2025

Tuberculosis remains a major public issue worldwide and, in the UK, where the incidence has increased by 25% since 2022. Whereas previously TB was mainly seen in specific high-burden settings within the UK, now previously termed low-burden areas are seeing more TB and health care providers need to be able to quickly and effectively deal with the patient and public health issues that arise. This course will help meet these needs and cover the key steps in TB diagnosis and management by the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), including medical, nursing, laboratory and public health specialists.

The course will be mainly case based to ensure that the course content is practical, relevant and accessible to delegates. There will be opportunity for interactive questions. It will be delivered by a faculty of experts who will be specialists representing the professions within the TB MDT and be drawn from centres and services across the UK. 

The course’s target audience are senior staff and trainees in adult and paediatric respiratory medicine and infectious diseases, TB nurses and nurses in allied specialities, and pharmacists involved with TB care.  

Participants should achieve the following learning outcomes: 

  • Understand the clinical management of TB, and how to deal effectively with issues that arise during TB treatment, where to seek help for complex and MDR TB cases and how to manage long-term complications of TB
  • Understand the psycho-social issues and support required for patients during treatment
  • Understand what public health structures exist to control TB in the UK, including legal obligations for services
  • Understand how TB transmission is identified, and how detected TB infection is treated and controlled
  • Understand the changing epidemiology of TB in the UK and how to deliver a modern TB service
