About the Global Lung Health Group

The placements are organised by the Global Lung Health Task and Finish Group which was established following the successful pilot project where the Society worked with the Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS).

The Group reports to the BTS Board and provides expertise to advise the Society about relevant stakeholder organisations and initiatives that support education and improve respiratory care outside the UK.

The focus is on support for low and middle-income countries, and the Group is responsible for a programme of activities, alongside a work plan that covers a 3-year period.

Educational placements in Africa

BTS is delighted to announce the final round of educational placements, which were first launched in 2022. These placements provide BTS members with an opportunity to visit a host hospital in Africa for a two-week period, followed by attendance at the joint PATS & ESSB Congress on 3 – 5 December 2025 in Cairo, Egypt.

BTS will cover travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs, as well as registration fees for Congress. Successful applicants will be asked to provide a short report on their placement for BTS.

Applications for this initiative have now closed, and applicants will be informed of the outcome in due course.
