BTS Board

The Board of Trustees sets our strategic direction, develops policy with advice from the BTS Council, oversees the delivery of our objectives and advises the Chief Executive.

Our Board is made up of 5 Honorary Officers, the chairs of our five standing committees, two lay members and up to two additional members with expertise in areas relevant to our strategic priorities.

The Board is led by our chair, Professor Richard Russell.

The Nominations Committee is a sub-committee of the Board.

Honorary Officers

Professor Richard Russell Chair Declaration of Interest 2026

Richard is a Clinical Reader at King's College London, the Head of the Peter Gorer Department of Immunobiology, and a Respiratory Consultant at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. He is the Clinical Director of the West Hampshire Integrated Respiratory Service, looking after COPD and asthma for 2.5 million people. He was also recently the Respiratory Director for NHS England SE region and Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB.

Richard is the founding editor of the International Journal of COPD (impact Factor 3.6), and he is keen to provide a platform for scientific developments from across the world.

Professor Robina Coker President Declaration of Interest 2026

Robina is Professor of Practice in Respiratory Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College London. She has run the interstitial lung disease (ILD) service at Hammersmith since 1999. Robina was Clinical Director of the NIHR North-West London (NWL) Comprehensive Local Research Network and Clinical Director of the NIHR NWL Clinical Research Network. She was President of the Harveian Society of London in 2022 and was awarded a Bronze Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2019 for her work on air travel safety.

Robina was a founding member of the BTS Lung Disease Registry Programme and received the BTS Meritorious Service Award in 2021. She currently represents BTS on the NHSE Specialised Respiratory Commissioning Clinical Reference Group (CRG).

Professor Adam Hill President - elect Declaration of Interest 2026

Adam is Post Graduate Dean, NHS Education for Scotland and Professor of Respiratory Medicine, University of Edinburgh. He chairs the British Thoracic Society Standards of Care Committee and is the NHS Research Scotland Respiratory Lead, Respiratory Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), and is working with the Scottish Government long-term conditions team. He is a trustee of the Morriston Davies Trust. 

Dr Charlotte Addy BTS Honorary Secretary Declaration of Interest 2026

A self-confessed Sputumologist, Charlotte is a respiratory physician and Clinical Senior Lecturer based in Cardiff, with specialist interests in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Bronchiectasis. She has research interests in lung infection, inflammation, and biomarkers and is part of the CF Trust Clinical Trials accelerator Programme and European CF Society Clinical Trials Network (ECFS-CTN).

Charlotte is co-chair of the CF Trust Antimicrobial guideline group, sits on the ECFS Standards of Care Committee and helped write the recent ECFS standards of care. She also has keen interests in service development, education, training, and workforce planning, and is the Training Programme Director for South Wales.

Dr Alanna Hare BTS Honorary Treasurer Declaration of Interest 2026

Alanna is a consultant in sleep and ventilation at Royal Brompton Hospital, with responsibility for specialist clinics in sleep disorders and domiciliary ventilation. She is the Trust's end-of-life clinical lead and leads on medical education in respiratory medicine. She is President of the British Sleep Society and recently chaired a national programme on the review of outpatient Sleep Medicine pathways, from referral through diagnostics and timely treatment, working with GIRFT and NHSE.

Alanna has lectured extensively, authored book chapters, and published articles on both non-invasive ventilation and simulation-based education.

Dr Martin Allen Declaration of Interest 2026

Martin is the GIRFT Respiratory Clinical Lead, Consultant physician at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, and NHS National Specialty Adviser for physiological science. He is the clinical lead for the NHS England RNOH/GIRFT Tuberculosis review and the Scotland TB review. In 2021, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for services to the NHS.

His main research interests are Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), sleep, and respiratory physiology, and he is chair of the Board for the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP). He also chairs the Respiratory Expert Working Group on coding for NHS Digital and sits on the Royal College of Physicians’ commissioning group.

Professor Mona Bafadhel Declaration of Interest 2026

Mona is the Director of the new King’s Centre for Lung Health and the Chair of Respiratory Medicine at King’s College London. She is also a consultant respiratory physician with a clinical and research interest in chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and asthma. Mona is an international academic leader in respiratory medicine, with a passion for translating science to clinical practice to improve outcomes for patients. 

Professor James Chalmers Declaration of Interest 2026

James took up the Rhodes Professorship of Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford in November 2025. Previously, he served as the Asthma + Lung UK Chair of Respiratory Research at the University of Dundee and as a Consultant Respiratory Physician.

James leads a translational research group focused on developing new treatments for bronchiectasis and is also interested in COPD, pneumonia, and associated conditions. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, including landmark trials that have changed practice in bronchiectasis. He has chaired five international guidelines panels, including the recent ERS bronchiectasis guidelines. He is the Chief Editor of the European Respiratory Journal.

Mrs Lucy Davies Declaration of Interest 2026

Lucy is the Executive Director for External Affairs and Engagement at RCS England. With over 15 years of leadership experience, she excels in strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and driving organisational change. Lucy is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and has extensive experience in membership engagement.

Dr Odiri Eneje Declaration of Interest 2026

Odiri is a consultant in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with a specialist interest in Cystic Fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, complex lung infections and respiratory immunology.

She has a Master of Arts in Clinical Education from University College London and is interested in the use of simulation-based training in medical education. She is currently the simulation lead for her trust. She has also completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge, investigating the role of inflammation in Cystic Fibrosis.

Dr Andrew Molyneux Declaration of Interest 2026

Andrew is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Sherwood Forest Hospitals. He trained and did his PhD in Health Services Research in Nottingham and the East Midlands. He has been a Consultant for 21 years with interests in sleep/NIV and COPD/ asthma, and is Clinical Lead for the Sleep and NIV Service at his Trust in North Nottinghamshire. Nationally, he has worked with NICE, chairing the COPD and Melanoma Guideline Committees, and co-chairing the BTS/SIGN/NICE Asthma Guideline Committee.

Ms Caroline Nokes Declaration of Interest 2026

Caroline is the founder and director of a boutique wellbeing business focused on self-care and menopause awareness. With 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, she held senior roles driving strategy, governance, and team development at national and international levels. A professional coach and wellbeing mentor, she is passionate about respiratory care, having previously project-managed the UK Respiratory Research Collaboration with BTS. Based in Sheffield, Caroline remains active in the field and is proud to rejoin BTS in a new capacity.

Dr Daniel Smith Declaration of Interest 2026

Dan is a Respiratory Consultant at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and has diverse experience in the healthcare sector. He is the Editor in Chief of Medical Care - driving change at the Royal College of Physicians and as a Clinical Associate for the Emergency Care Improvement Support, NHS England.

Dan gained valuable experience as a National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow at NHS England Midlands, leading workforce initiatives, including the development of the Medical Support Worker role and leading the collaborative teams that won the BMJ workforce award in 2021 for the Midlands Charter programme, improving the well-being of medical trainees across the region.

Dr Laura-Jane Smith Declaration of Interest 2026

Laura-Jane is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine/General Internal Medicine at King’s College London. She has a strong interest in developing and supporting sustainable healthcare. Within her Trust, Laura-Jane has created a new role, the Clinical Lead for Sustainability, and sits on the Sustainability Steering Group herself. This has involved establishing several working groups focused on Sustainable Respiratory Care (predominantly inhalers), Air Quality, and Sustainable Diets.

Laura-Jane has also held and worked with a range of other groups in the sustainable healthcare space.
