Remembering Professor Mike Morgan
We have all been shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of Professor Mike Morgan.
Mike was the epitome of a champion of respiratory medicine and healthcare, and he will be greatly missed by those he worked with in Leicester, by all within the British Thoracic Society, and by innumerable colleagues across the country and beyond. It is impossible to put down in words the impact that Mike had on respiratory medicine, and he improved everything and everyone he touched.
Mike was Chair of the BTS Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2012. He was BTS President in 2016, and in 2019, was awarded the BTS Medal for his contributions to respiratory medicine, in the fields of education, clinical practice and national policy. He was also an author of the BTS Guideline on Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the ERS/ATS statement.
He served as National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services at NHS England, in which role he was responsible for advising the government about respiratory care, including commissioning, quality and standards in England. During this time, Mike helped achieve the prioritisation of Respiratory Conditions through his work supporting the development of the NHS Long Term Plan.
His career interests included the assessment and management of respiratory disability, particularly in COPD, where he published widely and had a worldwide reputation. He inspired and supported members of the respiratory team in Leicester, developing services and individuals, and placed the interests of patients at the heart of all of his work.
Our deepest condolences are with Mike’s wife, his sons, and his family at this very difficult time.
