BTS welcomes incoming Honorary Treasurer

BTS is pleased to welcome Dr Alanna Hare to the BTS Board as the new Honorary Treasurer. The Honorary Treasurer provides an overview of the financial position of the Society, advises colleagues about investment strategy and sources and applications of funds. They also make recommendations annually about the income streams, expenditure plans and the Society’s Reserves Policy. 

Dr Alanna Hare graduated in 1999 at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge and completed her postgraduate training at St Mary’s, Imperial College School of Medicine in 2002. She completed her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Respiratory and General Medicine in the North East Thames Deanery in 2015.

Dr Hare is a consultant in sleep and ventilation at Royal Brompton Hospital, with responsibility for specialist clinics in sleep disorders and domiciliary ventilation. She is the Trust end-of-life clinical lead and leads on medical education in respiratory medicine. Dr Hare is President of the British Sleep Society and recently chaired a national programme on the review of outpatient Sleep Medicine pathways, from referral through diagnostics and timely treatment, working with GIRFT and NHSE.

Dr Hare is passionate about improving education and training, gaining a Masters in Clinical Education with Distinction from the Institute of Education. She has lectured extensively, authored a number of book chapters, and published a number of articles on both non-invasive ventilation and simulation-based education.

Dr Hare was appointed Chair of the British Thoracic Society Education and Training Committee in 2019 and led the multi-professional education portfolio of the Society. She sits on the BTS Board and was previously on the BTS Council and the Remuneration Committee. Dr Hare is also involved in the JIVD (a European society for individuals receiving home ventilation), the London and SE Coast Neuromuscular Network, the Adult North Star Network for individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the Sleep Council.

Dr Hare says of her new appointment:

“I am delighted to be taking on the post of Honorary Treasurer and look forward to continuing to ensure a secure financial future for the Society, enabling us to continue building our portfolio of work to support those working in respiratory medicine.”
