East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust are recruiting for 4 Consultant Respiratory Physicians across both their sites of Ipswich Hospital and Colchester Hospital. The new post holders will not be expected to have any general medical on call commitment.

Following a merger of our Trusts, we are growing our departments at both hospitals sites. The respiratory medicine departments are planned to continue on both sites. With the expansion of the departments we are looking to develop sub-specialist clinics and services across the Trusts joint population of ~800,000.

We are looking for colleagues who are able to partake of our rotation providing consultant supervision of our general respiratory inpatients. There is no commitment to the general medical take at Ipswich Hospital. The current respiratory physicians at Colchester Hospital are on the GIM rota but newly appointed colleagues may apply to not be involved in GIM takes. On average, appointees will have two clinics a week, share a bronchoscopy or pleural list and share in the department monthly rotation of supervising the ward inpatients, seeing inpatient respiratory referrals or being off inpatient duties.

We are looking for Colleagues to be based on one site and take forward further development of sub-specialist outpatient services in areas such as:

  • Interstitial Lung Disease
  • Pulmonary infection
  • Asthma
  • And/or support our established services in sleep, home NIV, cancer and EBUS bronchoscopy.
  • There are opportunities to be involved in pleural disease including expanding the current services in pleural intervention and thoracoscopy.

We have an increasing commitment to undergraduate teaching on both sites with respiratory modules being delivered to students from Cambridge, Norwich and London medical schools.

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust was established on 1st April 2002 and is one of the largest in the country.  Applications are invited for an exciting post.

The postholder will work in the respiratory inpatient team and support specialist and general respiratory services at Fairfield and across the Trust including lung cancer. In particular there will be a focus on COPD including working with the Rochdale community respiratory team. Pennine has a wide range of specialist respiratory services and most sub-specialty interests can be accommodated. The postholder will participate in the GIM on call rota at FGH and will, split the on call with a job share if LTFT. Currently this is a 1 in 9 commitment (i.e. 1 in 16 for LTFT).

Acute medicine consists of a team which supports the ? bedded MAU and the ambulatory care unit.

Candidates should be on the specialist register for Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine (or Acute Medicine/ GIM) or hold the certificate of completion of specialist training, or expect to do so within three months of the interview for the appointment.  The post is being offered at 10 PAs (6.5 respiratory and 3.5 acute/general internal medicine) but the Trust welcomes application from candidates wishing to work part time respiratory.

The successful candidate will join a team of 4 other Respiratory Consultants supported by a locum consultant, 3 SpRs, 3 Trust Grade Registrars and 10 junior doctors. The successful candidate would provide inpatient and outpatient services in Respiratory Medicine and contribute to the development of COPD and sleep services. Experience or enthusiasm in developing COPD services (e.g. admission prevention) would be desirable. The candidate will also participate in 1:15 acute on call rota for General Medicine.

There is excellent support from Specialist Nurses in COPD, lung cancer and TB. We have newly refurbished Pulmonary Function laboratory with dedicated Pulmonary Physiologists. We have excellent bronchoscopy services, Dedicated Pleural disease service including thoracoscopy, Lung cancer MDT (weekly), Respiratory teaching sessions (weekly), and GIM Grand Rounds (weekly). We have excellent respiratory ambulatory care facilities which could be utilized for developing innovative COPD pathways. Applicants are invited for a locum consultant in Respiratory Medicine for an initial 6 month period pending substantive appointment to a replacement post in our friendly respiratory department.

The successful applicant will join 7 respiratory consultants and 2 acute physicians with respiratory specialism (approx 8 FTE including this post) in a role including ward duties on a rotational timetable, respiratory clinics, procedure lists and a small contribution to the general medical on call rota. The current 10PA job plan includes 4 weeks in 16 on wards, 2-3 general and 1-2 sleep/ventilation clinics a week when off the ward, physician of the day duties 1 in 30 weekdays and 1 in 30 weekends, weekend respiratory ward rounds 1 in 8, and a contribution to the pleural procedure lists, but this can be adapted to suit the interests and experience of the successful applicant.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine. This post offers an exciting opportunity for either a recently-trained or an established respiratory consultant to develop the sleep service within our busy and visionary department.

Any second respiratory sub-specialty interest would be welcomed.

The Department
The Respiratory Centre at Portsmouth is one of the largest units in the country. The patient-base is 1% of the UK population, providing an exceptional range of clinical experience. This appointment will increase the department to a complement of 14 Consultant Respiratory Physicians. There is a well-established multi-disciplinary ethos, including a team of specialist respiratory nurses, a superintendent physiotherapist and team, a specialist lung-function and sleep team and a closely-integrated secretarial and clerical staff.

The department has a strong record of delivery in research and innovation, with a wide interest in educational activities, headed by a Chair in Respiratory Medicine; he is also Respiratory Lead for the Wessex Academic Health Science Network, facilitating departmental participation in regional Respiratory Quality Improvement programmes. The department has close links with the Universities of Portsmouth and Southampton.

The Respiratory Centre includes purpose-built respiratory outpatient facilities, a respiratory day-case ward and bronchoscopy suite, lung function laboratories, administrative and secretarial support, with office-space for the entire team. Chest imaging facilities are immediately adjacent.

Respiratory in-patients in Portsmouth
All respiratory consultants participate in the acute GIM take and on call at QAH (approx. 1:26). There is a newly-built 10-bedded state-of-the-art Respiratory High Care Unit run by the respiratory physicians, adjacent to dedicated respiratory wards with 66 further beds.

Portsmouth Sleep Service
Since our Sleep service was established 10 years ago, it has undergone rapid development and we see in excess of 1200 new cases per year, including referrals for a wide range of non-respiratory sleep disorders. We have an excellent multi-disciplinary team of nurses and physiologists who work closely with the rest of the Respiratory Department. Our sleep clinics are predominantly Nurse / Physiologist led, with access to a Consultant Sleep clinic for complex cases.
We have monthly sleep meetings that alternate between management of the service and departmental education.
We provide overnight polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance-of-wakefulness testing. We have actigraphy monitoring for suspected circadian disorders and unexplained hypersomnia.

Whole Time, Part Time or Job Share – 10 Programmed Activities (Additional programmed activity’s may be offered)

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join our team providing respiratory services across North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Coast. This post will be based at Scarborough Hospital with options for cross-site working as needed for subspecialty interests.  A full-time post is available but applications will also be considered for applicants wishing to job-share or work part-time.

The successful applicant will join a close-knit multi-professional team delivering acute hospital and some community services. Inpatient respiratory care is delivered on a shared 32 bedded ward at Scarborough Hospital. Outpatient clinics take place at Scarborough, Bridlington and Malton.  An interest in lung cancer and/or asthma would be especially welcome but candidates with other subspecialty interests are also encouraged to apply. 

The Trust works closely with the Hull York Medical School and offers the opportunity to participate in undergraduate teaching and research. Teaching facilities are available on-site at Scarborough Hospital and the post-holder would be supported in developing an academic interest if desired.

The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to the General Medical on-call rota at Scarborough Hospital, currently a 1:16 rota including early evening ‘post-take’ reviews and overnight non-resident on-call.

The Yorkshire Coast area is a welcoming and scenic place to live and work. Highlights including the North York Moors National Park, picturesque seaside towns and the historic city of York.  Transport links to London and the South East, and North East England and Scotland are good with York being on the East Coast mainline and close to major trunk roads.  There is also easy access to Leeds and West Yorkshire by road and train.

The recruitment programme will take place over two days as follows (please note that shortlisted candidates will need to be available to attend the Trust on all of the dates listed below):

Day 1; if shortlisted, we will invite you to an Assessment Centre on TBC where we will ask you to participate in 2 activities. The activities may consist of a hand written exercise, or a group activity / single activity where you may need to present to a board panel. All details will be provided on the day and there is no preparation required in advance. The Assessment Centre will be based in York in the morning/afternoon and usually lasts no more than 3 hours. Day 2; if you are successful at our Assessment Centre, you will be invited to an interview which will be held on TBC in Scarborough.

This is a Trust Grade post in Respiratory, and would typically involve working on the Respiratory / Diabetes Unit - Beech Ward, attending Consultant ward rounds and Beech Ward cover, as well as cross covering absence for colleagues within the Respiratory Department. Beech ward hosts patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions including chronic and acute respiratory disorders, airways diseases and lung cancers.

This is a new post based at The Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit which is at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield.

Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit is the largest specialist centre in the UK for the assessment and management of patients with suspected pulmonary vascular disease. The Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit is based on a dedicated ward and has excellent links with specialised medicine and access to world class imaging facilities. The successful applicant would join the existing team of 4 full time NHS Consultants and 2 Academic Consultants sharing responsibility for acute and elective patients on a rotational basis. On call duties are for the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit only with no General Medical or Respiratory on call. We have an active programme of both clinical and basic science research giving the opportunity for the successful candidate to join with projects already running or develop their own research interest and portfolio.

Competency at performing right heart catheterisation would be desirable but not essential to be considered for this post and there would also be potential opportunities to maintain other Respiratory skills such as bronchoscopy. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and innovative respiratory physician to join our expanding team at Whittington Health. You will be responsible for the continued delivery, and further development, of our already well-established, integrated respiratory service.

The respiratory team has an excellent local and national reputation for high value multidisciplinary, holistic care of patients with long-term respiratory conditions.

We are currently a team of 6 consultants, including this post, who provide care for outpatients, inpatients and patients in the community with a wide-range of respiratory conditions. This includes consultant led-care for our 21-23 bed specialist respiratory ward, including 4 HDU beds, run by an excellent experienced ward manager, supported by 2 SpRs and junior trainees. The hospital-based team includes three (2 WTE) respiratory specialist nurses, 3 respiratory physiologists, 3 clinical psychologists, 1 respiratory pharmacist and a lung cancer clinical nurse specialist and MDT coordinator. The post holder will work closely with the respiratory nurse specialist and  physiotherapist members of our community respiratory team (CORE), the hospital physiotherapy team and smoking cessation specialists. You will also be expected to participate in the emergency out of hours GIM Rota (1 in 16) including 8am-8pm at weekends with time off in lieu.   

You will take on shared leadership roles in lung cancer and pleural disease, including the ultrasound service (delivery and training juniors), and will be one of the consultants doing, and training respiratory registrars, in bronchoscopy. You will be expected to contribute to the range of quality improvement work across our respiratory pathways and lead in an area of quality improvement that reflects their own interest and expertise and that fits with the department aims.

Worthing Hospital is recruiting for a Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine post with inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. The post is full-time including participation in a full shift rota system working 1 in 7.

We are looking for a colleague who will lead in the development of either the pleural service or higher dependency respiratory service.

Pleural Service
The post-holder would be expected to have an interest in and ideally training experience with medical thoracoscopy. The Trust and the department would support the post holder in developing a local medical thoracoscopy service for the Trust as part of a wider programme to extend the scope of our short stay and day case pleural service.

Higher Dependency Respiratory Service
The post holder will be expected to have a specific interest in high dependency respiratory care. They would be supported in leading the development of a 4 to 6 bedded level 2 respiratory unit catering specifically for patients in acute respiratory failure who require non-invasive ventilatory support, Optiflow support etc including patients with artificial airways stepping down from the critical care and high dependency areas.

The post-holder would contribute to the GIM acute on call rota and in conjunction with the current three respiratory physicians provide an in-reach service to the Emergency Floor at the Worthing site. This will also make the department ready for the commissioning of the Sussex based home NIV service.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a replacement post within the Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT) Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Unit. MFT is one of thee major teaching hospitals in Manchester and has around 400 clinical medical students on site. It houses regional and supraregional services in Lung Disease, and currently has over 40 clinical and academic consultants in Respiratory Medicine, Allergy, and Infection.

The successful applicant will join an established team of health care professionals servicing a population of over 5 million. The MFT ILD Unit is a regional tertiary referral centre and is pivotal in driving a regional network across the North West of the UK. The post holder will work along-side Drs Nazia Chaudhuri and Dr Colm Leonard (joint leads) and Dr Pilar Rivera Ortega to continue to deliver a high quality ILD service across the city of Manchester. Out-patient and in-patient care will be shared alongside existing colleagues. The post holder will be actively involved in the organisation and delivery of the ILD MDT. As part of this post along with other colleagues the post holder will provide support and guidance to the ILD team (3x ILD specialist nurse, research nurse, MDT coordinator, 2 x ILD pharmacist and clinical research fellow). The ILD Unit has a reputation for clinical research and has close ties to the NIHR Clinical Research Facility.You would be encouraged to develop and support your own research theme, become PI on clinical trials, and an Honorary University contract at The University of Manchester would be negotiable. Education and training to staff, students and junior doctors will be an essential part of the role, and there will be opportunities to get involved in a more formal role in undergraduate or post graduate education for the appropriate applicant.

Applicants must have completed higher training and should have some experience in the specialist fields of ILD. Research training, and a postgraduate degree are desirable requirements (MD or PhD). This post would be suitable for SpR’s at completion of training, but also to consultants with expertise in ILD.

South Manchester has an excellent location close to the Lake District, Peak District and North Wales. Travel links are excellent, with the hospital within 2 miles of the international Airport and motorway network to North, South and West. Culturally and in terms of education for children there is massive opportunity and high quality housing is available within the required geographical locality required for on-call commitments.
