The BTS audit programme offers 11 national clinical audits covering both adult and paediatric respiratory disease. The audit system is hosted on a separate secure website and users are required to register for access.

Changes to how BTS collects and reports audit data
In April 2018, BTS introduced a new Clinical Data Policy setting out how we manage data collected through the BTS Audit Programme, BTS ILD Registry and BTS MDR-TB Clinical Advice Service. The Policy includes new Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) for the BTS audit system to allow for more transparent reporting of audit data, and a new Outlier Policy. As part of the changes, audit participants will need to register separately for each audit as either an audit lead or audit delegate, and all participants will need to accept the new T&Cs. A policy for sharing national audit data with appropriate third parties will follow later in 2018. The full Clinical Data Policy including audit system T&Cs and the Outlier Policy is available here.
National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme
The new National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme (NACAP) was launched on 1 March 2018, led by the Royal College of Physicians, London. The new programme will continue the work of the National COPD Audit Programme and involve new national audits for both adult and paediatric asthma. The British Thoracic Society is a partner in the NACAP programme and details of the new programme are available here: https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/projects/national-asthma-and-copd-audit-programme-nacap
The new national adult asthma audit will commence in November 2018, and the national paediatric asthma audit will begin in June 2019 – these programmes will comprise continuous data collection of admissions to hospital for asthma in each case together with a biennial snapshot of service organisation. Full details of the audit datasets will be available via the RCP website in due course.
BTS has offered national audits for both adult and paediatric asthma as part of its programme of national respiratory audits for well over 10 years, and for over 10 years before that, in different formats. There are no plans to offer the national BTS adult or paediatric audits in future, in view of the advent of the new NACAP programme, which will cover England, Wales and Scotland. Registered users of the BTS audit system will be able to use the BTS asthma audits on a local basis until the end of the year, and will also retain access to copies of the past reports from the BTS asthma audits for their own institutions.
National Audits and Quality Accounts
BTS audits have designated national audit periods when all eligible institutions are encouraged to participate (see below for the current programme). Outside of these periods, all BTS audit are available for local use, to allow users to compare their data with the national picture or previous audit periods.
Some BTS audits are included in the NHS England Quality Accounts List - please see the HQIP and Quality Accounts links (right) for further details.
