Dr John White will receive the BTS Meritorious Service Award for 2017 at a ceremony during the BTS Winter |Meeting on 6th December
This award was instituted in 2008 by the Society’s Nominations Committee. It is intended to recognise the service of those BTS members who have provided an exceptional service to the Society far above that which one would normally expect for their position/role;
John White is a consultant chest physician in York. He is currently co-Chair of the BTS/SIGN Guidelines Committee and has held this post for 5 years. He has served BTS in a number of capacities over the years, most recently as a Council member (he comes to the end of this period of service this year), a member of the Sleep Apnoea Advisory Group, a BTS representative on the NHSE/RCP London Patient Safety Committee , and as Chair of the Standards of Care Committee between 2008 and 2012. This last role also meant he was a Trustee of the Board of Trustees during that time.
Chairing the BTS/SIGN Asthma Guideline Committee (first with Dr Graham Douglas as his co-Chair, and latterly with Dr James Paton) has required the wisdom of Solomon combined with huge reserves of stamina and a capacity for extremely hard work.
The Society owes John a huge debt of gratitude for taking this work forward. It is a huge task, undertaken voluntarily on top of a very heavy clinical workload, and recently very often in a highly charged atmosphere. He represents the best of BTS – putting concern for patient welfare and best possible treatment at the heart of what he chooses to do for the greater good.
