BTS Staff


Sheila Edwards

Chief Executive

Sheila is the main link to BTS Trustees and Honorary Officers. She undertakes the usual chief officer functions and is currently the main contact for external liaison, public affairs and communications activities. Sheila works particularly closely with the Education &Training, Models of Care and Science & Research Committees and is the main contact, along with the Honorary Secretary, for the BTS Specialist Advisory Committees.


Sally Welham

Deputy Chief Executive

Sally takes the lead within head office for the Society's Quality Improvement activities, including Guidelines, Clinical Audit, BTS Lung Disease Registry and Care Bundles. She works closely with the Standards of Care, Quaity Improvement and Specialty Workforce Committees, plus liaison with NICE and SIGN. Sally is also responsible for supporting the work of the BTS Nominations Committee (including clinical excellence awards).


Joan Thompson

Head of Finance and Events Support

Joan is responsible for financial management and administration within the Society, and has a key role within the events support function. She liaises with staff and associates who are responsible for membership administration and events management and is responsible for the smooth operation of delegate bookings and safeguarding income and expenditure streams. Joan is also the lead for the annual financial audit.


Louise Preston

Project Manager: Standards and Education

Louise supports a number of projects within BTS. She manages the review and development of e-learning modules within the Learning Hub; the production of BTS Quality Standards and Guidelines; and leads on various BTS surveys and ad-hoc projects.


Ranjit Nandra

IT and Systems Support

Ranjit provides support for the IT systems which underpin the Society's activities - networks, hardware and software. He has responsibility for in-house audio-visual provision and other office support systems, and liaises closely with the Society's IT associates and website providers.


Laura Searle

Manager: Quality Improvement and Clinical Audit Programmes

Laura joined BTS in October 2013. She has responsibility for the day to day operation of the BTS audit programme, and contributes to the BTS guidelines and quality standards process. Laura also supports the BTS Quality Improvement Committee and the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Quality Improvement Advisory Group.


Polly Askwith

Head of Digital Development

Polly works across BTS and Respiratory Futures on the strategic development of their digital portfolios. As well as leading on the planning and delivery of new online areas, she is responsible for commissioning editorial content and overseeing social media channels. Polly also coordinates digital resources with related partnership organisations.


Maria Loughenbury

BTS Lung Disease Registry Manager

Maria joined BTS in December 2015 as manager of the BTS Lung Disease Registry Programme, a key strand of the BTS Quality Improvement portfolio. Maria has responsibility for the day to day operation of the Registry, liaison with Registry participants and she provides support for the Lung Disease Registry Steering Group.


Angela Barnes

Manager: Membership and Workforce

Angela is responsible for managing all aspects of the BTS membership system. She is also responsible for maintaining data on workforce and training.


Kirstie Opstad

Manager: Clinical Guideline and Quality Standards Programme

Kirstie joined BTS in March 2018 and is responsible for managing the Clinical Guideline and Quality Standards Programme and implementing GRADE methodology into the BTS Clinical Guideline production procedure.


Stacy Brown

Co-ordinator: Clinical programmes

Stacy supports the BTS guideline and quality standard process and is a member of the BTS audit team, providing assistance to audit system users. She also supports the Specialty Workforce Committee.


Bernice Bruce-Vanderpuije

Administrative Assistant: Operations

Bernice is the first point of contact for many callers and visitors to BTS head office. She provides assistance for membership, delegate and abstract administration and in-house support for meetings.


Deborah Broughton

Executive Assistant: Governance, Communications and Operations

Deborah has been with the Society since June 2016. Her role is to assist the Chief Executive with a range of functions relating to the BTS Board and Council; general governance matters (including annual elections, Declarations of Interest and BTS policy documents); internal and external communications; and the efficient operation of BTS head office.

Jackie Ford

Short Courses Manager

Jackie is responsible for running the Society's annual Short Courses programmes, working closely with the Education and Training Committee. She liases with course organisers and speakers as well as with venues and suppliers.


Cathryn Stokes

Conference Manager

Cathryn is the main point of contact in relation to organising and managing the Society's Winter and Summer Meetings, including liaison with venues and related services, speakers and exhibitors.
