BTS Staff


Sheila Edwards

Chief Executive

Sheila is the main link to BTS Trustees and Honorary Officers. She undertakes the usual chief officer functions. Sheila works particularly closely with the Education &Training, Models of Care and Science & Research Committees and is the main contact, along with the Honorary Secretary, for the BTS Specialist Advisory Committees.


Sally Welham

Deputy Chief Executive

Sally takes the lead within head office for the Society's Quality Improvement activities, including Guidelines, Clinical Audit, BTS Lung Disease Registry and Care Bundles. She works closely with the Standards of Care, Quaity Improvement and Specialty Workforce Committees, plus liaison with NICE and SIGN. Sally is also responsible for supporting the work of the BTS Nominations Committee (including clinical excellence awards).


Joan Thompson

Head of Finance and Events Support

Joan is responsible for financial management and administration within the Society, and has a key role within the events support function. She liaises with staff and associates who are responsible for membership administration and events management and is responsible for the smooth operation of delegate bookings and safeguarding income and expenditure streams. Joan is also the lead for the annual financial audit.


Louise Preston

Project Manager: Communications, Education and Quality Improvement

Louise supports a number of projects within BTS. She manages the internal communications with members; the BTS QI Bulletins; review and development of e-learning modules within the Learning Hub; and leads on various BTS surveys and ad-hoc projects as required.


Ranjit Singh

IT and Systems Support

Ranjit provides support for the IT systems which underpin the Society's activities - networks, hardware and software. He has responsibility for in-house audio-visual provision and other office support systems, and liaises closely with the Society's IT associates and website providers.


Laura Searle

Manager: Quality Improvement and Clinical Audit Programmes

Laura has responsibility for the day to day operation of the BTS audit programme. She also supports the BTS Quality Improvement Committee and related activities.


Maria Loughenbury

BTS Lung Disease Registry Manager

Maria manages the BTS Lung Disease Registry Programme which includes responsibility for the day to day operation of the Registry, liaison with Registry participants and support for the Lung Disease Registry Steering Group. She also supports the work of the MDRTB Clinical Advice Service


Angela Barnes

Manager: Membership and Workforce

Angela is responsible for managing all aspects of the BTS membership system.


Kirstie Opstad

Manager: Clinical Guideline and Quality Standards Programme

Kirstie is responsible for managing the Clinical Guideline and Quality Standards Programme and implementing GRADE methodology into the BTS Clinical Guideline production procedure.


Stacy Brown

Co-ordinator: Clinical programmes

Stacy supports the BTS Guideline and Quality Standards process and is a member of the BTS audit team, providing assistance to audit system users. She also supports the Specialty Workforce Committee and has had a leading role in the development of the new BTS website (due in February 2019).


Bernice Bruce-Vanderpuije

Co-ordinator: Operations

Bernice is the first point of contact for many callers and visitors to BTS head office. She provides assistance for membership, delegate and abstract administration and in-house support for meetings. Bernice also supports the work of the Science and Research and Education & Training Committees.


Richard Allsop

Operations Director

Richard is responsible for the efficient operation of BTS head office, providing leadership and support for the Operations Team. He liaises with suppliers and has a key role inn the operation of the Society's on-line processes such as annual elections and the Declarations of Interest scheme.


Ruth Ellenby

Head of Policy and Communications

Ruth is responsible for the Society's external communications and development of policy and related activities so that the Society is able to meet its strategic objectives. She provides leadership for the Society's Respiratory Futures programme and is involved in stakeholder relationships and liaison.

Jackie Ford

Short Courses Manager

Jackie is responsible for running the Society's annual Short Courses programmes.


Cathryn Stokes

Conference Manager

Cathryn is the main point of contact in relation to organising and managing the Society's Winter and Summer Meetings.
