Emergency Oxygen Use in Adults Course

The British Thoracic Society Education & Training Committee is pleased to announce a one day course on Emergency Oxygen organised by Professor Tony Davison, Southend University Hospital.

The course aims to understand the principles of safe oxygen therapy and thus protect patients from harm caused by hypoxaemia or hyperoxaemia and will familiarise delegates with the core content of the 2008 BTS Guideline for emergency oxygen use in adult patients. It is hoped that the participants will achieve the following learning objectives:understand the physiology of oxygen (and carbon dioxide) in the human body; understand how diseases can cause hypoxaemia; understand the physiological consequences of hypoxaemia and hyperoxaemia; increase understanding of blood gas results (arterial and arteriolised); understand the benefits and limitations of pulse oximetry; enhance clinical assessment of  seriously ill patients; increase understanding of which oxygen delivery devices are available and how to use them appropriately; enhance understanding of oxygen prescription and delivery & optimise oxygen prescription in common medical emergencies.

The course is aimed at consultants and respiratory trainees in respiratory medicine, general medicine, emergency medicine (A&E), acute medicine (MAU), respiratory nurse specialists, general nurses and specialist nurses from other disciplines who use oxygen, physiotherapists, ambulance paramedics and pharmacists.
