BTS Tobacco Advisory Group & BASSP Conference 21 October 2010
Venue: York Racecourse, York
In 2010, the British Thoracic Society brings together 2 strands in its active Stop Smoking endeavours in a unique working conference. This will bring together policy, strategy and practical assistance in the context of increasing scrutiny of NHS expenditure and the drive to demonstrate quality and cost-effectiveness in the health economies in all parts of the United Kingdom.
The Tobacco Specialist Advisory Group (SAG) is the successor to the Society’s Tobacco Committee and has recently been awarded funds to develop the network of Stop Smoking Champions in Acute Trusts, which BTS is managing following the successful Department of Health pilots in 2009. The conference will provide the first opportunity for the Stop Smoking Champions to meet, discuss and influence the framework that is being put in place to support their work.
The British Association of Stop Smoking Practitioners (BASSP) was established in 2007 after a successful event in 2006 to test the interest, and at which it became clear that there was a demand for a supportive network to be established for this significant group of practitioners. Since then BASSP has held a further 2 annual conferences, which have focussed on the acquisition of knowledge, the development of networks and discussion and promotion of best practice.
This conference will bring both together for a day at which we aim to provide all delegates with:
- a shared briefing about national policy and strategies;
- the availability of national resources;
- an insight into the health economics;
- and, in the afternoon, parallel sessions of interest to each group, followed by a stimulating debate on the hot topic of targets.
The over-arching theme for the day will be the safeguarding of Stop Smoking resources in a time of cut-backs and the need to continue to provide support for those who want to stop smoking and make a significant difference to their health. The Society hopes that the outcome will be a strong call to national policy-makers to continue support for effective Stop Smoking Services.
Fee: £50 if booked before 6 September 2010, £60 if booked between 6 September and 8 October 2010.
Closing date for applications: 8 October 2010.
