Endoscopic Management of Lung Volume Reduction (EBLVR)
31 May 2012, WIMAT, Cardiff Medicentre

Aimed at:
Higher Surgical Trainees (ST3 and above), Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Chest Physicians with an interest in EBLVR

Course content:

  • Lung volume reduction surgery, indications, complications, results
  • Endobronchial valve implantation, indications, procedure, technical devices, complication and results
  • The use of endobronchial valves for lung reduction: an early experience
  • The use of endobronchial valves for the control of complex air leaks
  • Live case with expert commentary

This will be an intensive 1 day course with the emphasis on the hands on practical workship and an opportunity to practise on life like simulations.  There will be an opportunity to have a hands-on demo of EBUS technology.

VATS Lobectomy Cadaveric Workshop & Live Surgery Masterclass
18-19 June 2012, The Medicentre, Cardiff

A 2-day event focusing on VATS surgery, the Cardiff VATS Masterclass will introduce thoracic surgeons to innovative practice in Lobectomy, incorporating cadaveric and live operating into a cutting edge workshop.  As part of this exciting event, WIMAT are pleased t welcome the expertise of World-renowned surgeon - Dr Robert McKenna - a Head of Department of thoracic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles.

VATS Lobectomy Cadaveric Workshop, 18 June 2012 - Thoracic Consultants will have a unique opportunity to improve, develop and new technique of treatment of lung cancer allowing realistic hands on training on human cadaver under the direct supervision of work expert Mr McKenna.  Cost £500

VATS Live Surgery Masterclass, 19 June 2012 - guest faculty lead by Mr Robert McKenna, performing live VATS Lobectomy from University Hospital of Wales new integrated theatre.  Delegates will have the chance to watch this exciting technique by live link with live commentary.  Cost £150

This course is aimed at Consultant Thoracic Surgeons and SpR 5 and above with experience of VATS Lobectomy.

COPD8

7th 2012 International Symposium on Cough
5-7 July 2012, Imperial College, London

This International Symposium entitled: Taming Chronic Cough, is organised by Professor Fan Chung in memory of Professor John Widdicombe.  This will be a series of state-of-the-art lectures on the science, pathology and treatment of chronic cough by international scientists and clinicians, with opportunity for lots of interactions and discussion.  There is also an opportunity to present posters.

British Association of Lung Research Summer Conference 2012
11 – 13 July 2012

The BALR Annual Summer Meeting 2012 on ‘Infections as Initiators and Exacerbators of Chronic Lung Disease’ will take place between the 11th-13th July at the University of Southampton in Southampton, United Kingdom.

As well as a programme of internationally-renowned speakers, the meeting will also include our traditional Young Investigator competition (£750 prize*), poster competition (£250 prize*) and selected free communications.  As usual, abstracts will be considered on any respiratory topic.  A number of travel bursaries (£100) will also be available*.

Anyone working in the respiratory arena will benefit from attending – the topics are highly relevant and will have a major influence upon almost every conceivable area of lung research.

Clinical Exercise Testing & Interpretation - A Practical Approach

The 11th Cambridge/UCLA course on Clinical Exercise Testing & Interpretation aims to take attendees through from first principles to practical conduct and interpretation of cardiopulmonary exercise tests in disease states. The clinical application of test findings will be covered in interactive sessions and homework books. The course represents an unrivalled opportunity to work in small groups with leaders in the field, in an informal setting.

This course is aimed at trainees and consultants in specialities aligned to Cardio Pulmonary exercise testing. In particular Respiratory, Sports Medicine and Exercise and Anaesthetic trainees have previously found the course very valuable and provided high ratings of feedback.

ISMC 2012 - International Sleep Medicine Course
23-27 September 2012

The International Sleep Medicine Course is a comprehensive course for respiratory SpRs and Consultants wishing to learn more about respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders.  Lecture topics range from sleep apnoea and cardiometabolic syndrome to narcolepsy, insomnia and parasomnias. The course includes workshops on oximetry, polysomnography, actigraphy and CPAP therapy.

Places are limited to 80 delegates to facilitate discussion and small group workshops.
