Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit
One Year Research Opportunity for Specialist Registrar in Respiratory Medicine: A UK Wide Database Analysis of Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

The Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit is one of the seven designated Units for Pulmonary Hypertension in the United Kingdom and Ireland.  It has obtained one year’s funding to support a Specialist Registrar wishing to undergo a year of research. The funding will cover salary and all costs to allow the Fellow to travel to all of the Pulmonary Vascular Units of the UK and Ireland and undertake database analysis.  There is a possibility of a second years funding.

The purpose of the project is to determine the incidence, prevalence, prognosis and  success and failures of therapy for all patients in the United Kingdom with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. This will be the largest data set of IPAH ever examined. The project has been agreed by the Pulmonary Hypertension physicians of the UK and Ireland and is a follow-on from the highly successful project carried out by Dr Robin Condliffe, a Sheffield-based SpR, who performed the same data analysis for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Connective Tissue Disease Pulmonary Hypertension.  Those two studies were done during a single year, resulted in two papers in The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

This is a great opportunity for a Specialist Registrar who does not yet have an MD or PhD, but wishes to undergo an intensive period of research to obtain publications and a possible MD. The applicant does have not have to base him or herself in Glasgow, but training will be given in Glasgow and there is the precedent set by Dr Robin Condliffe, so that all the relevant pitfalls can be overcome.

Appointment will start as soon as practicable. Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Andrew Peacock, Director, Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit, West of Scotland, Regional Heart & Lung Centre, The Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Beardmore Street, Clydebank, G81 4HX.  Tel:  0141 951 5497. Fax:  0141 951 5948. E-mail:  apeacock@udcf.gla.ac.uk

RESPIRATORY MEDICINE
CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW REF: 428-08

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex condition that affects multiple organs. Co-morbidities have considerable impact on health status and survival for patients with COPD. Fatigue is a major problem for COPD patients, particularly during exacerbations, but very little is known about underlying mechanisms. The post-holder will conduct a study that will explore cognitive function and cognitive aspects of fatigue in patients with COPD when stable and during exacerbations. The study is designed to run alongside a Phase IIb randomised, controlled clinical trial of tight glycaemic control with insulin for patients with COPD exacerbations. Cognitive function testing will be used in this trial to look at the effects of disease and determine the safety of treatment as side effects (hypoglycaemia) have potential to impair brain function. This project will be supervised by Professor Paul Jones, Principal Investigator for the cognitive function study and Dr Emma Baker, Principal Investigator for the Phase IIb clinical trial of intensive insulin therapy.
