Consultation on Services for COPD in England and plans for implementation
The consultation document on services for people with COPD in England was published on 23 February by the Department of Health for consultation and feedback. See the full document here and send in comments here. The Department of Health, in partnership with the 10 SHAs in England and NHS Improvement and supported by BTS, PCRS-UK, BLF and AUK, is holding a series of regional events for healthcare professionals to hear more about the content of the Strategy and to feed back views.

The next intake of the University of Western Australia's Graduate Certificates of Paediatric Respiratory Science and Paediatric Sleep Science is in July 2010. Once again UWA is offering partial scholarships to members of BTS to undertake the course of their choice. These courses have been endorsed by the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology and students successfully completing the course will receive 220 CME credits

Edinburgh Sleep Medicine Course

A Journey Through the Paediatric Airway
22–24 March 2010

The aim of this course is to provide individuals with practical knowledge of how and when to use clinic, ward and laboratory-based lung function assessment (including cardio-pulmonary exercise testing and sleep studies) in the management of children with respiratory symptoms.  Delegates will also develop a working understanding on devices most suited to the delivery of inhaled drugs to different age groups.

Sessions will include: asthma and allergic rhinitis, non-CF bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis, sleep disordered breathing and respiratory aspects of neuromuscular disease and practical respiratory assessment and formal lung Spirometry.

Royal Society of Medicine: Practical aspects of severe asthma now and in the future

This conference will update the clinician/nurse specialist on the practical issues of managing patients with uncontrolled symptoms despite maximum conventional asthma therapy. International Course on Tuberculosis for Low and Intermediate Incidence Countries  
19–22 April 2010

Filha (the Finnish Lung Health Association) has been organising International Tuberculosis Courses for medical doctors for 14 years and for registered nurses for 9 years from high incidence countries in Estonia together with the National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP) of Estonia, the Tartu University Clinics under the auspices of the WHO and The Union for high incidence countries. In the changing tuberculosis situation in Europe, a need for a new course targeted for low and intermediate incidence countries of the WHO European region was noted. The course complex was expanded in April 2009 by an International Course on Tuberculosis low and ntermediate incidence countries. This new course was well received and will be organised also in April 2010. 

The purpose of the course is to improve capacity of medical specialists in addressing the changing challenges in TB control in the region. After the course participants are expected to have improved competence in clinical management of TB as well as in using this knowledge for the advancement of TB control programmes in their countries. The course provides a forum for interaction among specialists as well as for stimulating collaboration. 

This course is designed for medical doctors in specialities of pulmonology, infectious diseases and tuberculosis from low and intermediate incidence countries in the European region and professionals in expert or public health positions in relation to TB programmes at the national or regional level. 

The main emphasis of the four-day course is on diagnosis and treatment of MDR-TB, XDR-TB and TB/HIV co-infection. The topics will also include epidemiology, surveillance, diagnostic methods, laboratory issues, infection control, screening and treatment of latent TB infection. New innovations in TB management and control will be discussed.  

The training is participatory and the course includes lectures, discussions and group sessions based on exercises and case studies. Site visits to the TB and MDR-TB wards and National TB Register will be organised.  

The course will be taught in English

Post-course evaluation of the course will be carried out. 

The course fee is 1500 euros. The fee entitles the participant to the training programme, course materials, lunches, accommodation and social programme. The participants will have to pay for their travel from their country to Tartu and back home themselves. The group reservations for hotel accommodation have been made in Hotel Draakon, located in the old town hall square in Tartu and in Tallinn Hotel St. Barbara also with a central location.  

The course will be invoiced prior to the course. The course fee should be paid to the bank account of Filha by 1 April 2010. When notice of cancellation is received within seven working days before the course start date, the cancellation fee is 50% of the course fee payable.

The Sixth Yorkshire Chest Imaging Course

A comprehensive 1-day course aimed at developing an understanding of radiological pattern recognition and providing an outline for evaluating chest radiographs. Workshop on Lung Function Tests, Asthma and Work

Suitable for all Occupational Health professionals with a particular interest in spirometry and lung function testing, and their implications in the workplace. 

Examines the role of lung function testing in the workplace.  Covers spirometry, histamine provocation and exercise testing: interpretation, abnormalities, longitudinal changes, individual variation and role in health surveillance; use in pre-employment screening/fitness to work; risk assessment of people with asthma. 

NB: this is not a practical Spirometry course; a working knowledge of practical spirometry is assumed.

Thoracic Ultrasound Course

The course is aimed at consultants and specialist trainees who have little or no experience of thoracic ultrasound. The day provides both lectures and practical experience. During the practical sessions, you will be divided into small groups and will scan a number of normal volunteers and patients under direct supervision of a trainer. If required, delegates establishing a logbook, can obtain documentation from the trainer for each scan successfully performed. The course is accompanied by a DVD (which includes example cases, lectures and videos of scan technique) and a booklet (which includes logbook, RCR recommendations and references).

6th International Symposium on Cough

Clinical Respiratory Radiology Course
