Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is the provision of ventilatory support through the patient’s upper airway using a mask or similar device. A BTS Guideline was published in 2002 on the use of NIV in acute respiratory failure. The Society plans to update this Guideline, with work starting in early 2008.
