2008 British Guideline on the Management of Asthma
The new edition of the BTS/SIGN British Guideline on the Management of Asthma was published in the May 2008 issue of Thorax. The new 2008 guideline contains a completely rewritten section on diagnosis for both adults and children; a section on special situations which includes occupational asthma, asthma in pregnancy and the new topic of difficult asthma; updated sections on pharmacological and non-pharmacological management; and amalgamated sections on patient education and compliance, and on organisation of care and audit.

2007 Update to the British Guideline on the Management of Asthma
In February 2003, the BTS and SIGN together published the evidence-based British Guideline on the Management of Asthma as a supplement to Thorax. The guideline is intended to be a comprehensive resource for those caring for individuals in asthma, whether in the community or hospital.

The asthma guideline is regularly updated to incorporate the results of the latest research. In April 2004 there was an update to sections on pharmacological management, self management and patient education, and the organisation and delivery of care for those with asthma in primary care and hospital. In November 2005 the sections on pharmacological management, inhaler devices, occupational asthma and audit and outcomes were updated. A further update to the pharmacological management section was released in July 2007.

A major review of the entire guideline, with publication of a revised paper copy is planned to take place in early 2008.
